The Leading Borehole Drilling Companies in Zimbabwe (Updated 2022)

Think Water Zimbabwe is one of the Leading Borehole Drilling Companies in Zimbabwe

Established in 2019, Think Water Zimbabwe owns four state of the art PRD drilling rigs and compressors that can drill up to a depth of 800m, making Think Water Zimbabwe one of the only Zimbabwean company that can drill the deepest.

Having been in existence for four years, we have extensive knowledge in the field of borehole drilling and understand the requirements of specific customers as well as projects. The company has been involved in a number of projects involving evaluation, baseline studies, feasibility studies, environmental impact assessment, project design and proposal development, community need assessment etc.

Currently, the company employs five drillers and two technical assistants on each rig with over ten years of combined experience in drilling and maintenance of the machines.

The Company has a total of 17 employees, who form part of the drilling crew in their respective units. For pump and recovery tests, the company has 12 pumps for use on-site, including the necessary equipment to lower and lift submersible pumps.

Our Services:

1. Geological Survey: After the contract has been formalized, our technical team will visit the site along with geologists to identify the best place to carry out the drilling process.

2. Mobilization: The drilling rig accompanied by a support truck will reach the site. Based on the soil and rock formation conditions, we would take approximately 3 hours to prepare for the drilling process.

3. Borehole Drilling: The drilling is carried out by using the “Down-The-Hole” technology. This system works by using highly compressed air built within our drilling rig. The size of the hole can vary depending on the requirement of the client. As the drilling process continues, geological rock samples are taken at 2-meter intervals. Struck and water rest levels are constantly recorded. This process enables us to estimate the yield of individual aquifers encountered.

4. Borehole Casing: Once the borehole has been drilled, it must be lined with either steel or UPVC casing. The casing process keeps the Borehole open and protects the earth, similar to the efforts to protect groundwater. The hard metal casing shores up the borehole and extends through both the verticality and the horizontal drilling phases, assuring the long-term integrity of the borehole from end to end. In addition to providing stabilization and keeping the sides of the borehole from caving in on themselves, the casing protects the Borehole stream.

5. Borehole Development: Once the screen, pack, seals and backfill have been installed, the Borehole is developed. This development aims at repairing the damage done to the aquifer during the course of drilling by removing clays and other additives from the borehole.

This also alters the physical characteristics of the aquifer around the screen and removes fine particles. The use of over-pumping as a means of development is not advocated since it only increases permeability in zones that are already permeable. Instead, we recommend mechanical surging with a plunger or the use of air or water jetting which physically agitates the gravel pack and adjacent aquifer material. This is an extremely efficient method of developing and cleaning Boreholes.

6. Borehole Testing: After development and preliminary tests, a long-duration Borehole test is carried out. Boreholes tests have to be carried out on all newly-completed Boreholes, because not only does this give an indication of the success of the drilling, design and development, but it also yields formation on aquifer parameters which are vital to the hydrogeologist.

A Borehole test consists of pumping Boreholes from a measured static water level (SWL) at a known or measured yield, and recording the rate and pattern by which the water level within the Borehole changes. Once a dynamic water level (DWL) is reached, the rate of inflow to the Borehole equals the rate of pumping. Today, it is a common practice to carry out a ‘step drawdown test’, in which the yield is increased stepwise. Each step is continued until hydraulic equilibrium is reached after which the yield is increased by 50 to 100%.

Towards the end of the test, a water sample of 2 litres is collected for chemical analysis. The duration of the test is 24 hours, with a further 8 hours for a recovery test (during which the rate of recovery to SWL I recorded). The results of the test enable the hydrogeologist to calculate the best pumping rate, the installation depth, and the drawdown for a given discharge rate.

7. Water Quality Test Think Water Zimbabwe has contracted well-trained chemists that conduct water quality tests in the quest of knowing the status of total coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids and pH levels. When a client suspects other contaminants, Think Water Zimbawe also tests for such.

Five Facts About Borehole Drilling That You Need To Take Note Of:
1. Know Your Borehole Casings:The Preferred Borehole Casing In Zimbabwe Is Class 9 and 10 (Pressure Classes.)This is because Class 9 and Class 10 Casings are more collapse resistant. The strength of a Casing is often described as collapse resistance.

2. Borehole Drilling Depth: The exact depth, of where the water is located, cannot be established by the drilling contractor nor the Water Surveyor (Borehole Siter).

3. The Is No 100% Guarantee On Water: It is important to note that it is never a 100% guarantee that any hole will yield water, the amount and water quality can also not be guaranteed by the drilling contractor and water surveyor.

4. Borehole Siting or Water Surveying Is Important: Making use of a hydrologist or traditional water diviner will increase your chances of having a successful borehole that will yield a sufficient amount of water.

5. Know The Risks: The risk of the borehole drilling lies with the property owner. The client will still be liable for the drilling costs irrespective of a borehole yielding water or not.

The Cost or Prices For Borehole Drilling in Zimbabwe:

1. Siting: $100.00USD
2. Drilling and Casing: (40 Metres) $1300.00USD - (Using Class 6)
3. AC Electrical Installation: $1000.00USD
4. Solar Pump Installation: $1400.00USD
5. Extra Metres After 40 Metres: USD $45.00USD per metre.
6. 5000 Litre Tank and 4 metre Tank Stand: $1000.00USD
7. Stuck Pump Fishing Out: $180.00USD
8. Capacity Testing: $250.00USD

- Casing with Class 9 Casing incurs an additional $200.00USD.
- Double Casing: $20.00USD per metre.

Note this is the average price borehole companies charge for their services in Zimbabwe, but this figure is subject to changes if conditions are different depending on the construction site.
